The NES port of Nintendo's 1981 arcade game casts the player as Mario, climbing girders and ladders to rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong while dodging thrown barrels. Its four stages established Mario and Donkey Kong as recurring characters. The home version preserved the arcade original's structure and scoring.
